PreK/Kindergarten Class: The Kindergarten music class at Shields is guided by Music Together curriculum. It is a classroom and family tested music curriculum by hundreds of teachers and thousands of families since 1987. Students will learn the music concepts such as: steady beat; High/low; Fast/Slow; Loud/Soft through the song collection and activities that is research-based and artistically conceived and produced by The Center for Music and Young Children. The music activities includes chanting, singing, dancing and instruments play.
1st Grade Orff Class: The music curriculum is based on the principles of Orff-Schulwerk’s approach, which is to use music, movement, drama and speech into lessons to teach students the music concepts. In the Unit, students will learn the rhythm of the speech through imitation, theory, improvisation and instrument play; students will also learn musical notation and form through singing and instrument play. At the end of the unit, students will put the elements of singing, movements and instruments together and perform it as an ensemble.
2nd Grade Keyboard Class: The 2nd grade music class at Shields is emphasized on the Keyboard. The music curriculum is adapted from Piano Adventure by Randall and Nancy Faber. Students will first learn to read the music notation, then identify the keys on the keyboard using the correct fingers, postures, and technique. At the end of the unit, students will be able to perform “Merrily We Roll Along” on the keyboard.
3rd Grade Recorder The music curriculum is based on the principles of Orff-Schulwerk’s approach, which is to use music, movement, drama and speech into lessons to teach students the music concepts. In this unit, students will incorporate the recorder playing into the Orff ensemble. They will first learn about the hand posture, fingers, tonguing to produce high quality sound on the recorder. Then, students will play songs like Hot Cross Bun, Clair de Lune, and Ode to Joy. At the end the unit, students will perform an ensemble that includes the recorder and the Orff instruments.
4th Grade Guitar Class: The 4th grade music class at Shields will focus on the guitar. In this Unit, students will learn about the guitar types, guitar parts, hand posture, hand position and strumming technique on the opening strings, C and G7 chords. At the end of the unit, students will be able to accompany songs on the guitar.
